Watch Victoria take you behind the scenes of the decision to pause her own marketing and rebuild the team, systems, SOPs, and capacity needed for stronger growth.
In this episode of The Own Your Brand Show, Victoria Odekomaya takes listeners behind the scenes of a major business decision: turning off her own marketing in August, in the middle of a year she had planned to build toward a million-dollar agency.
Victoria explains that she did not stop marketing because leads were no longer coming in or because business was slow. She stopped because the company was already carrying enough work, and bringing in more clients at that moment would not have strengthened the business. It would have exposed the weaknesses inside the operation and possibly broken the system she was trying to build.
The episode begins as part of her million-dollar journey, where she documents what it actually takes to build an agency in real time. She explains that one of the first things she had to examine was her calendar. When she looked closely, she realized she was still spending too much time inside the daily operations of the studio instead of building the company. If the agency was going to scale, she needed to work on the business, not only inside the business.
A major part of the episode focuses on hiring and team structure. Victoria shares how several team members came and went in a short period of time. She talks about hiring someone to take photography off her plate, losing an admin who had become central to the business, letting go of a social media manager who required too much prompting, and dealing with a video editor who could not keep up with the quality and speed the business needed.
Through those experiences, Victoria learned the difference between hiring someone who completes tasks and hiring someone who owns an outcome. A task person waits for instruction. An owner sees what needs to happen and moves before the business owner has to remind them. That lesson changed how she viewed her team, her time, and the kind of people needed to build a stronger agency.
The real turning point came when Victoria joined a mastermind and wrote down every person on her team and how long they had been with the company. She realized the longest-tenured person on the team had only been there for three and a half months. That showed her that the agency did not yet have the foundation to support more growth. The business had systems and processes, but too much of it still depended on her personally.
That realization led to the decision to pause marketing and spend August rebuilding the foundation. Instead of bringing on new clients, Victoria focused on training the team, documenting SOPs, organizing the work, and writing down what had previously lived only in her head. She also began thinking more carefully about profit, capacity, and what it means to build a company that can grow without her doing most of the work.
The episode also connects the staffing story back to marketing. Victoria explains that she could turn her marketing off because there was actually a system there to turn off. Many business owners do not have that. They may have a website, social media, referrals, and daily posting habits, but that is not the same as a marketing system. A real system can be turned up, turned down, paused, restarted, and measured.
The key message is that growth requires foundation. Marketing can create demand, but if the team, operations, SOPs, capacity, and delivery system are not ready, more visibility can create more pressure instead of more profit. Victoria’s revised goal is not just to build a million-dollar business. It is to build a profitable million-dollar agency with strong margins, a reliable team, and systems that can survive real life.
The main takeaway from this episode is that growth without foundation can break a business. Marketing can bring attention, leads, and new clients, but if the team, systems, SOPs, capacity, and delivery process are not strong enough, more demand can create more chaos.
Victoria’s decision to pause marketing was not about stepping back from growth. It was about building the structure needed to support better growth. A strong business needs more than visibility. It needs people who own outcomes, systems that can run without constant supervision, documented processes, and a marketing engine that can be turned up or down with intention.
Your business may already have visibility, content, referrals, and strong work. But if everything depends on you remembering to post, follow up, explain, or push the next step forward, the system may not be strong enough yet.
