In this episode, Victoria Odekomaya explains why referrals are powerful but not predictable. She walks through the marketing system that helps people move from finding you, to trusting you, to taking the next step toward working with you.
This episode is highly visual. Watch Victoria break down the buyer’s journey and the marketing system that helps turn visibility into clients.
In this episode of The Own Your Brand Show, Victoria Odekomaya asks a simple but important question: where is your next client coming from? For many service business owners, the honest answer is word of mouth or referrals. Victoria makes it clear that referrals are valuable because they often come with borrowed trust, but they are not fully predictable. You cannot decide when someone will mention your name, and you cannot turn word of mouth up just because you need three new clients next month.
The episode explains why a business needs more than hope, memory, pressure, or random posting. Victoria breaks down the difference between having marketing activity and having a real marketing system. Many business owners have processes for onboarding, invoicing, scheduling, and delivering their services, but when it comes to marketing, they often rely on whatever they remember to do when business gets quiet.
Victoria explains that a marketing system is built with specific parts, and each part has a job. The top of the system includes the channels that introduce new people to your business. Those channels could include networking, speaking, podcasts, social media, paid ads, Google search, direct outreach, strategic partnerships, print media, referrals, or other paths that help people discover you.
She also separates the marketing funnel from the buyer’s journey. The marketing funnel is the system you build inside your business. It includes the channels, the capture point, the nurture process, and the conversion step. The buyer’s journey belongs to the buyer. It is the psychological process they move through as they go from unaware, to problem aware, to solution aware, to considering your specific company, and finally to being ready to take action.
One of the strongest lessons in this episode is that people do not always enter your funnel at the same stage of awareness. Someone may already know they need a marketing strategy but may be completely new to LiMStudios. Another person may have followed Victoria for years but may not yet believe their marketing problem is serious enough to invest in. That is why content needs a clear job. It must meet people where they are and help them move forward.
Victoria also explains why capture matters. Getting attention is not enough. After someone finds you, there needs to be a next step that turns an anonymous person into someone you have permission to contact again. That may be a consultation, guide, assessment, event registration, checklist, or another valuable offer. A booking link works for people who are ready today, but it cannot be the entire capture strategy.
The episode then moves into the middle of the funnel, where nurture happens. Victoria explains that nurturing is what happens while the buyer is getting ready. This is where you speak to their concerns, answer objections, show up in their inbox, create useful content, and build trust through repeated contact. A podcast, email list, social media, and even paid ads can all support nurture when they are used intentionally.
At the bottom of the funnel is conversion. Victoria explains that the quality of the nurture system can change the quality of the sales conversation. Without nurture, the business owner may spend the call trying to prove credibility. With strong nurture, the buyer arrives already warmer, more informed, and more confident. The conversation becomes less about convincing and more about deciding whether the offer is the right fit.
The key message is that being found is important, but being found is not the same as being hired. A strong marketing system helps the right people discover you, understand the problem, trust your expertise, enter your world, stay connected, and eventually take the next step when they are ready.
The main takeaway from this episode is that being found is not the same as being hired. A business needs a marketing system that helps people move from awareness to trust, from trust to connection, and from connection to a clear next step.
Referrals can create momentum, but they should not be the entire marketing infrastructure. A stronger system gives every channel, piece of content, capture point, nurture message, and sales conversation a purpose.
Your business should not depend only on hoping someone remembers to refer you. You need a system that helps the right people find you, trust you, stay connected, and take the next step when they are ready.
